Thousands of residents have been without running water since the weekend after a water main burst, cutting off their supply.

The break happened on Epping Road near Mowbray Road in Lane Cove on Sydney's lower north shore on Saturday and has left both homes and businesses without water.

People have been impacted across Artarmon, Chatswood, Cremorne, Greenwich, Lane Cove, Lane Cove West, Neutral Bay, North Sydney, Waverton, and Wollstonecraft.

Some have lost water all together, while others are experiencing lower than usual pressure.

Sydney Water said technicians are onsite and crew "worked through the night" to try and restore water supply.

"We understand there's been a delay in rectifying the issue, but we're committed to finding a solution as quickly as we can in order to restore services to impacted properties," it wrote on Twitter.

Some residents reported having to collect water from the road in buckets in order to flush their toilets, and accused Sydney Water of downplaying the situation.

Water also flooded the streets near the burst main in Lane Cove this morning causing major traffic delays. Buses are still delayed by up to 30 minutes.

There are also reports students at North Sydney Girls are being sent home as they have no water.
