Federal Labor frontbencher Tony Burke has submitted his travel expenses to a review by the Finance Department.

Mr Burke has been under fire over his use of taxpayer expenses to go to Uluru with his family in 2012.

Despite the trip being within the rules because it included a series of work-related meetings, he told reporters in Sydney on Thursday he had decided to refer his expenses record to the department for a check.

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett said he didn't believe the public should foot the bill for such trips.

"I think some of those so-called entitlements are hangovers from previous eras, but because they are there doesn't mean you use them in that way," Mr Barnett told 6PR on Thursday.

"They have been rorted. And the Australian public is entitled to be angry."
