The Bureau of Meteorology wants you to stop calling them by the name everyone uses
The Bureau of Meteorology has sent out a request asking all media organisations to stop referring to it as the "BoM", but it has run into some challenges in making the change on its own social media channels.
The government agency sent out a press release at 10am on Tuesday, requesting media change their style guides to "support" the body.
"With an ever-increasing number of severe weather events, it is more crucial than ever that the Bureau of Meteorology's insights, wisdom, data and information are shared, understood and acted upon," the release stated.

The Bureau of Meteorology is attempting to rebrand away from "BoM", however its own app still uses the name.. BoM
"To support this need, the Bureau of Meteorology asks that media outlets update editorial style to ensure references to the organisation are by its full name, the Bureau of Meteorology or the Bureau for short, and not BOM or the Weather Bureau.
"This aligns with the Meteorology Act 1955."
The BoM also said it would be switching its Twitter handles to reflect the change.
"To support this change we are updating our main Twitter handle to @TheBureau_Au. Our state Twitter handles will be updated to @TheBureau_NSW, @TheBureau_ACT, @TheBureau_Vic, @TheBureau_Tas, @TheBureau_Qld, @TheBureau_SA, @TheBureau_NT and @TheBureau_WA," it said.

However, because the press release was sent out before the Bureau made changes to its Twitter profiles, some users decided to swoop in on the handles.
At the time of writing, all of them except for SA and NT have been taken, some by existing accounts that changed their usernames, others by brand new profiles which snapped up the still-unsecured handles.
