'I remember flying up in the air': Builder in wheelchair after alleged verbal altercation with motorist escalates

A Central Coast builder and father says his life was shattered by what followed an alleged verbal altercation with a motorist over dangerous driving.

Gary Blinman, 46, was collecting a pizza for dinner from a local takeaway when he says he criticised another driver for speeding through suburban streets.

"I think I said to him, you know, you should be ashamed of yourself, fair dinkum," Mr Blinman told A Current Affair.

"Like it's school holidays, it's dinner time, look around, there's kids everywhere."

The incident that followed left him with a shattered leg and dislocated shoulder.

Mr Blinman said he had been left helpless in a gutter.

"I remember flying up in the air probably a metre, a metre and a half above the car," he said.

"I just remember my knee going bang, straight into the gutter, knee first."

He praised the people who came to his aid, including nearby diners.

Bradley Smith, 21, is facing seven charges over the incident, including negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm.

Mr Smith told A Current Affair he regretted the injuries Mr Blinman had suffered but refused to comment further.

Doctors say it will be months before Mr Blinman will be able to walk again, and perhaps years before he can return to work.

Mr Blinman said he was unsure if he would be able to continue the work he had done before his incident.

"I can't jump in the car and drive down south and see my dad's grave, I can't jump in the car and see my kids in Sydney," he said.

"So it's isolated me."

Mr Smith will return to court in September.
