Hunter becomes the hunted as buffalo gores taxidermist

A hunter almost became the hunted, when a giant buffalo turned on him in the Northern Territory.

Danny Vanbrugh had just shot the 800kg animal, when it charged up to him and gored him in the arm.

"He's lifted me and swung his horn across my back," Mr Vanbrugh told 9News.

Full of adrenaline, the angry beast sent him running for his life.

"As I was running, I said to my son, 'shoot him', so he's shot him and he's dropped him," he said.

His short trip to the Top End turned into a two-week stay in hospital, with Mr Vanbrugh needing 10 surgeries on his right bicep.

But the taxidermist is undeterred by his wild encounter.

"I ordered a new gun the next day ... it's my life so I'll keep doing it until I die," he said.

As for the animal, Mr Vanbrugh says he'll find a special place for it on his wall.
