Bruce Lehrmann doesn't rule out suing Higgins for defamation

Former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann says he has not ruled out pursuing defamation action against Brittany Higgins over claims he raped her in Parliament House.

Lehrmann again denied he had raped Higgins in an interview with Spotlight, and also that they had ever had consensual sex.

Lehrmann in 2021 was charged with raping Higgins, leading to a high-profile court case that ended after an instance of juror misconduct last year.

Lehrmann pleaded not guilty in court and has strenuously maintained his innocence.

During last night's interview, CCTV footage was aired for the first time that showed Lehrmann and Higgins entering Parliament House on the night of the alleged assault.

He said he and Higgins had gone their separate ways after entering the office of Senator Linda Reynolds.

Asked how it was that Higgins had ended up naked on a couch in the office, Lehrmann said it was a "great question".

"I can't talk to that because I never saw her again. That was news to me with the rest of the country," he said.

Lehrmann also used to the interview to criticise ACT Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold, who after the trial was aborted said that while no retrial would be pursued, he believed there had been reasonable prospects of Lehrmann's conviction.

"He took my opportunity for a not guilty verdict away from me, but he then told Australia, 'I still could have won it'," Lehrmann said.
