Boy hit by ute fighting for life

A school boy is fighting for life in hospital after he was hit by a ute in Brisbane's south this morning.

The 16-year-old boy was standing near a bus stop in Parkinson just before 7am when he was hit by the ute, driven by a red P-plate driver barely a year older than him.

The driver, aged 17, was on his way home from a night shift at work and allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel.

The car crossed to the wrong side of Algester Road and hit a group of school children waiting for the school bus, before ploughing through the fence of a home.

Home owner Jacqui Hayes said the car stopped just centimetres from a bedroom wall.

"I think the retaining wall and the hedges were what has saved… slowed the vehicle down," Ms Hayes said.

"Obviously we're all praying for a full recovery and praying for the young kid in the car as well.

"It's just a really unfortunate accident."

The boy remains in a serious condition in Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The driver was not injured and is assisting police.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
