Brisbane drivers film hail smashing windscreens

Brisbane residents have filmed dramatic footage inside cars showing the moment golf ball-sized hailstones came crashing down yesterday, shattering their windscreens.

In one video posted to YouTube, a man was driving through to Brisbane CBD to pick up his wife after work when the hailstones hit.

The noise is deafening inside the car as the chunks of ice smash against the windscreen.

Soon several cracks begin to appear and spread across the windscreen.

Destructive winds up to 141km/h had sent the hailstones catapulting down across the CBD and surrounding suburbs yesterday afternoon leaving a trail of destruction.

In other videos uploaded to social media, terrified shoppers are seen ducking for cover and a Brisbane train station floods as water gushes over the tracks.

At least four light planes were flipped in severe winds at Archerfield Airport causing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

The army has been called in to help with the clean-up and Queensland Premier Campbell Newman says all available emergency personnel have been mobilised.
