A Brisbane family's lives have likely changed forever after winning the $40 million Powerball jackpot.

A father in his 30s, who wants to remain anonymous, was the sole winner of the massive prize drawn on Thursday night.

"That's cool," the gobsmacked winner said when told of his windfall over the phone.

"We'll take our time and do the right thing with this prize money.

"We're going to look after everyone that's close to us."

The man also won other divisional prizes, taking his actual winnings total to $40,429,365.80.

His winning numbers were 36, 38, 21, 39, 29 and 22. The Powerball was 12.

It's the second time a sole winner from Queensland has claimed the Powerball jackpot.

In February, an Innisfail woman won $6 million.
