A man who allegedly walked out of a Sydney hospital before carjacking a woman’s vehicle and assaulting her in the city’s south has been arrested and remains under police guard.

NSW Police allege a 52-year-old woman had been driving her silver Toyota Corolla when she stopped on Ocean Street in Kogarah and the man entered the vehicle through a rear door about 8.30pm.

The 24-year-old man, Sonny Attard, had allegedly armed himself with a pocket knife, threatened the driver and demanded he be driven to Maroubra.

Attard is accused of smashing a glass panel at St George Hospital before leaving the facility in just a hospital gown and committing the carjacking.

The woman soon attempted to flee the car on Trafalgar Street in Brighton-Le-Sands when the man is accused of assaulting her with the tool and then stealing the vehicle.

"Whilst attempting to leave the vehicle a struggle ensued and she suffered head and neck injuries - the neck injury being consistent with a stab wound," Superintendent Julian Griffiths said today.

The female driver was helped by members of the public before being taken to St George Hospital in a serious but stable condition with cuts to her face and neck and her undergone emergency surgery today.

Authorities also allege that the man later crashed the woman’s Corolla into another white Toyota Corolla, which bounced into a Mercedes, at the intersection of Crawford Road and President Avenue in Brighton-Le-Sands.

The female driver of the second Corolla received minor injuries in the crash, but the alleged carjacker was trapped in the stolen vehicle after hitting a brick wall.
