McKenzie rules out quitting Senate to contest Indi seat

Deputy National Party leader Bridget McKenzie has ruled out quitting the Senate to contest a Lower House seat at the election.

Ms McKenzie today finally ended speculation she would run in the regional Victorian seat of Indi, vacated by the retirement of independent MP Cathy McGowan.

The Minister for Sport and Regional Services, says she's happy to stay on and serve out her six-year term.

Ms McKenzie has recently moved her office into the electorate, sparking talk she was ready to throw her hat into the ring.

A switch to the House of Reps would have put her in a position to contest the leadership of the Nationals in the future.

Independent Cathy McGowan first won Indi in 2013, defeating long-serving Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella with a strong grassroots campaign.

Indi is set to be a four-cornered contest with Ms McGowan's anointed successor Helen Haines, the Liberals' Steve Martin and Labor candidate Eric Kerr, along with the National representative.
