Brexit: Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn will back second referendum

British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn is set to announce that the Labour Party will support a second referendum on Brexit.

Labour will put forward or support "an amendment in favour of a fresh public vote "to prevent a damaging Tory Brexit" if their own proposed Brexit deal is thrown out of parliament tomorrow (local time), which is almost certain.

"One way or another, we will do everything in our power to prevent No Deal and oppose a damaging Tory Brexit based on Theresa May's overwhelmingly rejected deal," Corbyn is set to tell a party meeting.

Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer said on Twitter: "This week Labour will put its alternative plan for a vote in the House of Commons."

"If Parliament rejects our plan, then Labour will deliver on the promise we made at our annual conference and support a public vote," Starmer added.

This move by Labour, which it says is in line with its conference position from last year, could pave the path toward a second vote on any Brexit deal.

It comes after the latest schedule parliamentary vote on MS May's Brexit deal on Wednesday was again delayed by the prime minister in a desperate effort.

Ms May's Conservative Party is splintering over her handling of Brexit, while nine Labour MPs have also quit the party, further confusing the situation.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday before flying to Egypt for an EU-Arab League summit, May said the vote would now happen by March 12 - a mere 17 days before Brexit day.

She is coming under growing pressure to delay that date.
