Bravery awards for Customs crew

The crew of an Australian Customs vessel that rescued scores of asylum seekers from a stricken boat have been presented with bravery awards.

While 88 people were saved from the waters north of Christmas Island on July 12, 2013, a baby boy died in the emergency.

Customs vessel Triton was the first on scene after authorities received a call for help as the boat started to take on water in rough seas.

"The entire crew demonstrated selfless bravery, perseverance and tenacity, given the weather conditions," Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said.

"Many lives were saved through their courage and commitment. Their efforts will be remembered as an incredible service to our country."

The awards were presented during a ceremony at Parliament House on Thursday night, which recognised outstanding efforts within the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

Mr Morrison offered the government's thanks to members of the Service for "protecting us from the many threats that present at our borders".
