Brave tradie fights off would-be car thieves

A young dad on his way to work has courageously taken on a pair of would-be car robbers outside his family home.

Video shows two thugs confronting the tradie - who has not been named - while he sat inside his ute outside his home on Buller Avenue, Clyde North, about 5.30am today.

Armed with a baseball bat and knuckledusters, the bandits demanded the ute keys from the victim, before smashing his passenger window.

In a state of panic, the victim reversed up the street and knocked over a sign as the thugs again tried to steal the ute.

He then accelerated forward, speeding down the street before losing control and crashing into a front yard.

Running for his life, he sought refuge in the garage of a nearby home but, in an unfortunate twist of mistaken identity, the homeowners thought he was the offender.

“I heard by husband yell ‘get out, get out’,” the resident said.

“I passed the baseball bat out.”

While the offenders failed to steal the victim’s ute, they did manage to steal his keys, phone, wallet, smoko bag and a packet of 2 Minute Noodles.

The 28-year-old only moved into the street last month, but told 9NEWS he “can’t live here anymore” and plans to return to Queensland with his family.
