A boy has died as fire engulfed a caravan parked near a Victorian farmhouse.

The boy's mother raised the alarm when the fire started in the caravan.

Acting Senior Sergeant Tony Turner of Seymour police said the five-year-old boy's body was found inside the caravan as firefighters fought the blaze.

"The mother of the boy is extremely distraught. It is quite a tragedy for all concerned," he told AAP.

"It's very upsetting. This involves a five-year-old child. Most of us have kids. This is a tragedy for all of us."

The caravan was parked 150-200 metres from the family home on the property in scrub at Hilldene, a sparsely populated rural area near Seymour.

The cause of Thursday's fire is not yet known, Acting Sen Sgt Turner said.

"Detectives are still processing the scene. It's a matter of ongoing inquiry at this stage," he said.
