Man charged with attempted kidnapping over incident on Melbourne tram

A man has been charged with attempted kidnapping after he allegedly tried to abduct a young boy from a tram in Melbourne's east.

The 39-year-old man was getting off tram 109 near Elgar Road in Box Hill about 3.45pm on Monday when he allegedly grabbed a young boy, according to police.

The man allegedly tried to pull the boy off the tram before a female passenger intervened and pulled the child back onto the tram.

The man then got off the tram and headed towards Box Hill Central shopping centre.

The boy was not physically injured during the alleged incident.

The Camberwell man was arrested yesterday afternoon and charged with attempted kidnapping, common law assault and commit indictable offence whilst on bail.

He is due to front Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.
