Bourke Street rampage traumatised hundreds

More than 1200 people have sought counselling after witnessing a man plough into pedestrians in Melbourne’s Bourke Street mall in January.

Six people, including a three-month-old baby, were killed and 37 injured when James "Jimmy" Gargasoulas allegedly mounted the kerb in a stolen car and indiscriminately mowed down crowds of people walking through the popular pedestrian strip.

Six months later, a report by Emergency Management Victoria has revealed the widespread impact the harrowing incident had on many who witnessed the bloodshed.

Of the 1254 people who sought counselling, 59 identified as being "severely impacted", The Australian reported.

At least 38 children have been referred for support, while 16 people who were injured in the rampage are still undergoing physical rehabilitation.

An inquest into the deaths of three-month-old Zachary Bryant, ten-year-old Thalia Hakin, 33-year-old Melbourne father Matthew Si, 22-year-old Sydney woman Jess Mudie, 33-year-old Bhavita Patel and a 25-year-old Japanese national will be launched on Thursday.

Victoria Police closed parts of Melbourne's CBD last week to perform "detailed mapping" of the crime scene.

Gargasoulas has been charged with six counts of murder and also faces 28 charges of attempted murder over the incident.

There are fears his matter may not reach trial until 2019.

He will appear in the Supreme Court on November 20.
