Fraudster mum 'ripped off business' for $100k

Nicole Smith looks like any other mum. She has two kids, a nice house and until recently a good job, but Nicole has a secret – she is a thief and a liar.

In the last decade, while working as an administration officer for different small businesses, Smith stole thousands of dollars.

Six years ago she pleaded guilty to aggravated fraud of $120,000 and was jailed for nine months under her maiden name Brooks.

Yesterday in Brisbane's District Court, she pleaded guilty to fraud and dishonestly obtaining property over $30,000.

While she was facing the most recent set of charges Smith had started working for another boss, Leo Kriticos, who said he had no idea of her criminal history.

"She was the best applicant for the job," Mr Kriticos told A Current Affair.

"It wasn't until I picked up some anomalies in the accounts that I started digging."

Mr Kriticos now believes Nicole was paying herself instead of paying his suppliers.

"I can't believe she looked me in the face everyday while she was stealing from me," he said.

"We estimate she has stolen more than $80,000 in cash. She has also used corporate credit cards to pay for fast food, groceries and $400 a night hotel rooms."

Mr Kriticos estimates the alleged losses at more than $100,000.

Police are now investigating the matter.

Smith will be sentenced next month after yesterday's guilty plea, but for Mr Kriticos it could be too late.

"Because of our losses we have had to downsize and I could lose my business altogether," he said.

"But we have the proof. She left a digital footprint she can't deny, so we hope the police take action soon."
