Boost to cut Vic elective surgery waits

The Victorian government will spend $190 million on elective surgery to cut waiting lists.

The funding boost will be made in the 2014/15 state budget delivered on Tuesday and include $45 million over the next year.

Health Minister David Davis says the funds will enable hospitals to deliver more elective surgery procedures.

"The focus on our elective surgery boost will be to target waiting times, so that more patients can receive their treatment more quickly," he said.

"Our hospitals are performing a record number of procedures, and this funding boost will drive that to even greater numbers."

More than 48,000 patients were on the elective surgery waiting list as at December 31 last year according to the Victorian Health Services Performance quarterly report.
