Decomposing body found in boot of car on Sydney street

A decomposing body has been found in the boot of a car in Sydney's west.

Police made the discovery on East Street in Lidcombe, after responding to complaints about an abandoned car.

"They showed up, had a look, and there was a body in there," a police media spokeswoman said.

Police said the person appeared to have been dead for some time, with locals telling them the green Honda Accord had been there for about a fortnight.

It is not known the gender or age of the person.

"The car has been abandoned there for the last two to three weeks," nearby neighbour Justin Salar, 22 told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"We're all pretty shocked at the moment."

Another witness at the scene claimed he could smell the body when standing near the car.

Inspector Paul Arnold said the vehicle had what looked like silver foil or gaffer tape on the corners of the bumper.

“Upon attending, officers opened the vehicle’s door and were subjected to an overwhelming smell,” he said.

Neighbours said it was not uncommon for students from the nearby TAFE and university campuses to dump unwanted cars in the area.​

"It came to my notice because it had a silver thing attached to the bumper bar," resident Kunasingham Sivakumar said.

Later this afternoon the body was removed from the car and taken to Glebe Morgue.

A post-mortum is expected to be conducted tomorrow.
