The remains of two soldiers believed to be Australians have been found on a World War I battlefield in France.

The remains were discovered by a French fossicker in an area known to locals as the Australian line at Bullecourt, the scene of savage fighting in 1917.

A button featuring a map of Australia was found with the remains, Veterans Affairs Minister Michael Ronaldson said on Friday.
