A man has jumped to safety from his boat after it burst into flames on the Mornington Peninsula

The fire broke out just after 4pm off Blairgowrie, with authorities forced to take a boat out on the water to battle the flames.

The owner, who was uninjured was picked up by a nearby boat and was taken to shore.

But the man then left and has not been contacted since.

Authorities are now trying to track him down to determine how the fire started.

"We saw some flames starting to come out of the boat, in about two minutes it was fully alight," witness Gavin Blackwell told 9NEWS.

The owner is being asked to contact police.
