Australian global hit show Bluey to be made into feature film

Bluey fans are about to get a whole lot more screen time with the beloved Heeler family, with the hit Australian cartoon headed for the big screen.

The BBC today announced a deal with Walt Disney to turn the beloved children's show into a full-length feature film.

But fans will stay have a while to wait, with the production set to land in cinemas in 2027, after which it will stream on Disney+.

Initially launched on ABC Kids in 2018, the cartoon about an inexhaustible seven-year-old Blue Heeler named Bluey and her family has become a global sensation, winning BAFTA and Emmy awards.

It was the most-watched television series in the United States this year, with more than 842 million hours viewed to date.

The animated feature film will be produced by Ludo Studio in Queensland and written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brumm.

The Queensland government has hailed the decision, saying it will bring 130 local jobs to the state and contribute $35 million to the economy through production costs.

"I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on The Sign in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that," Brumm said.

"I've always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie."
