Blue Mountains teen who fell to death a promising athlete

The teenager who fell to his death in the Blue Mountains yesterday was a promising footballer who had won a US sports scholarship.

Winmalee local Matt Dyer, 18, was a talented soccer player whose life was tragically cut short when he fell from Hawkesbury Lookout, where he was spending time with friends.

Police say the 18-year-old fell 30 or 40m to his death.

Friends who were with him ran to the bottom of the cliff and tried to revive him while they waited for emergency services.

Mr Dyer, who graduated last year, excelled at sports at St Columba's College in Springwood.

Principal Paul Ryan, told Fairfax that Mr Dyer "represented the school in a number of sports but soccer was his passion".

"It was a very tragic accident, we just have to provide as much support to the students and ex-students as we can."

The Catholic Education Office has sent counsellors to the homes of those present when the teenager died.

Police say a report on Mr Dyer's death is being prepared for the coroner.
