Blind man completes 100km Antarctic Ice Marathon

A Hong Kong man has become the first blind person to complete the Antarctic Ice Marathon.

Gary Leung Siu-wai, 49, was guided along the 100km track by the female winner, Jennifer Cheung Sze-ying, on January 22, the South China Morning Post reported.

The marathon was part of the World Marathon Challenge, which involves  competitors running seven marathons across seven continents in seven days.

The pair’s run raised money for Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong, a non-government organisation that provides mental health counselling services, the Post reported.

“You have to put in the effort to reach your goal. It was not just about the competition, it was the love and support I got from my family, friends and especially Jennifer,” Mr Leung said.

He also took to Facebook to thank his supporters who supplied him with “food and drinks, clothes and replacement gear”.

Mr Leung lost his sight in 2009 and aimed to show that it would not hinder his determination.

“Nothing is impossible for disabled or able-bodied people,” he said.

“You can just try and do your best.”
