Hundreds of Australia’s biggest retailers are embracing the US shopping tradition of offering huge discounts for Black Friday from today to capitalise on the pre-Christmas shopping period.

Throughout the day, we will be revealing which stores will be offering the best sales and secret codes across the country.

Black Friday originated in the US - a shopping extravaganza that immediately followed Thanksgiving.

But in the last three years, Aussie retailers have embraced the phenomenon, which heralds as the beginning of the Christmas shopping period.

Many retailers will be continuing Black Friday sales over the weekend and some up until Monday.

In America, more than 160 million people are anticipated to reach into their wallets over the sales period.

While Aussies generally save their bargain shopping spree for Boxing Day, it appears Black Friday is catching up with shoppers looking to purchase their Christmas gift shopping.

To get a hold of the best deals, consumers are also turning to Australia Post’s parcel-forwarding service, ShopMate, to purchase items in America and have them shipped to their door.
