Bishop weighs up Indonesia response

Australia is considering various responses to Indonesia's execution of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

The Australian drug traffickers were executed last week in Indonesia despite multiple appeals for clemency from Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Prime Minister Tony Abbott and others.

Australia has pulled ambassador Paul Grigson out of Jakarta and he met with Ms Bishop in Perth on Monday.

Ms Bishop told reporters that having the ambassador back in Australia meant the government could move to the "next step" of managing the fallout from the Indonesia's failure to heed the pleas.

"We will now discuss the short-, medium- and long-term consequences and how we will manage the relationship going forward," Ms Bishop said.

Asked whether cuts to foreign aid to Indonesia would be part of the response, the minister said budget discussions were a matter for cabinet.

She declined to say when the ambassador would return to Jakarta.
