What a difference a week makes to diplomatic connections between Canberra and Washington.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on Tuesday told government MPs she had spoken to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on his first day in the job and the phone call could not have been warmer.

The call came after revelations new US President Donald Trump berated then hung up on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull during their first official conversation.

But Ms Bishop said after her talk with Mr Tillerson she had no doubt the two very friendly countries would continue to work together.

The foreign minister is also meeting her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Canberra on Tuesday.

The fact she would have such a cordial conversation with Mr Tillerson in the morning and another meeting with the Chinese foreign minister in the afternoon showed Australia could manage relationships with both super powers "in a calm, considered and mature way", she told MPs.

"Every nation puts their own interests first and it's in Australia's interest to provide peace and stability and security," she said.
