Bindi Irwin's US boyfriend has bonded with her family by joining them on a crocodile-catching trip similar to those undertaken by her late father, Steve.

Wakeboarder Chandler Powell travelled to Australia to celebrate Bindi's 18th birthday last month, and then joined the family on their annual Croc Trip this month.

Video and images from the trip show Powell learning to jump on crocodiles being caught for research purposes on the Wenlock River in Queensland.

Bindi, her mother Terri and her brother Robert could be seen helping Powell learn their family trade, along with Australia Zoo and University of Queensland staff.

"Bonding over jumping crocodiles is a thing right?" Powell wrote on Instagram on Monday.

Yesterday, he wrote that he was "already counting down until next year".

Powell also wrote that the past month had been "by far one of the most memorable for me".

Bindi also seemed to enjoy the trip, documenting it on Instagram and reminiscing about similar trips with her father before his death in 2006.
