‘The real winners are millionaires’: Bill Shorten slams Budget 2017

Opposition leader Bill Shorten has said the federal budget delivers a tax cut for millionaires and a tax hike for every working Australian.

Mr Shorten appeared on the Today Show this morning to address the newly unveiled budget.

“Last night, Malcolm Turnbull increased the taxes of everyday working Australian,” he told the Today Show’s co-host Lisa Wilkinson.

“He gave a tax cut to millionaires and multinationals. That’s not a Labor budget.”

Mr Shorten said there were some “good points” about the budget, mentioning his party’s campaign to stop women affected by domestic violence being cross-examined by their attackers in court.

“It’s good they’ve (the Turnbull government) put some money back into that they cut.”

Mr Shorten then continued to criticise the budget.

“On Medicare, people are going to have to wait for up to three years to see some of the freezes, and rebates going to patients restored.

“For schools, there’s 22 billion dollars cut out, and universities fees go up.

“We’re still going to have the world’s oldest retirement age.”

Mr Shorten said the “real winners” were Australians who earned upwards of $250,000.

“This is a budget where the real winners are if you earn $250,000 or a million dollars, and your taxes go down.

“Every other working Australian…their taxes will go up.”

Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen last night said the budget failed the jobs test as unemployment was forecast to rise.

"He has chosen big business over middle and working class families. He has chosen multinationals over Medicare. He has chosen big business over battlers."
