No yolk: Massive egg laid on Queensland farm had second egg inside

Scott Stockman has seen a lot of eggs – 50,000 a day in fact – but he’s never seen one this big.

The rare 176-gram chicken egg, three-times the size of a standard egg, was found in a free-range shed at Stockman’s Eggs in Kairi in Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands.

It’s the biggest egg produced on the farm in its almost 100-year history.

But the giant beauty was a freak of nature for more than just its size.

Mr Stockman told 9news.com.au he called all his staff together to witness the egg being cracked open.

They’d been expecting to find two or three yolks inside – a common phenomenon – but instead, found another perfect egg.

“It’s very rare to get such a big egg, and all of a sudden there was another whole egg inside,” he said.

The second egg was closer to the standard size and had a complete shell.

“We were all quite shocked,” he said.

“The nutrition must have been spot on to get the egg fully formed.”

Despite this, the team opted not to eat the superior specimen.

Mr Stockman said it was impossible to tell which of the farm’s 3000 free-range hens had laid the giant egg.

The employee who found it, nicknamed Zippy, has worked at the farm for about six years.

Stockman’s Eggs has been operational since 1923 and produces around 50,000 eggs a day.
