Residents are being allowed to return home after a bushfire threatening Perth suburbs late into the night was downgraded.

Just before midnight (3am AEDT), the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the blaze threatening northern parts of Aubin Grove and western parts of Banjup was now a Watch and Act alert.

Hours earlier hundreds are believed to have fled their homes as an Emergency Warning alert was issued for the suburbs.

"You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes," the DFES said in its alert for the suburbs in Perth's south just after 9pm (midnight AEDT).

The warning was for people in the area bounded by Lyon Road, Gibbs Road, Beenyup Road, Freycinet Circuit and Cape Range Crescent.

"For people in homes on and nearby Prosperity Loop, it's too late to leave," the DFES says.

"You need to shelter in your home in a room away from the fire front and make sure you can easily escape."

Fires burned in and around Perth throughout the day.

Earlier in the evening, an emergency warning had been earlier issued for southern parts of Atwell. That was later reduced to a Watch and Act and then an Advice alert at midnight.

The fire impacting all suburbs started near the intersection of Nornalup Close and Aubin Grove Link.

A blaze had earlier threatened the town of Bibra Lake but DFES have downgraded the warning for that area, saying the fire is now contained and under control.
