Better budget deficit in September quarter

The federal budget deficit for the September quarter has come in $3 billion lower than forecast.

The underlying cash balance after the first three months of the financial year stands at minus $21.3 billion against a May budget forecast of minus $24.3 billion.

While revenues were $1.2 billion less than predicted, expenses were about $800 million under budget.
