Brisbane woman convicted of bestiality 'should not own pets'

An animal rights group has said a Brisbane woman convicted of bestiality with her dog should not be allowed to own pets.

Animal Liberation Queensland president Chay Neal said he wished the sentencing judge had ruled that Jenna Louise Driscoll, 27, should not be allowed to own any animal after she yesterday received two-and-a-half years' probation over the charges.

"I'd certainly be concerned about anyone with that sort of history being in control of an animal again," Mr Neal said.

Judge Terry Martin also yesterday sentenced Driscoll to two-and-a-half years jail, immediately suspended, for trafficking cannabis.

She was ordered her to undergo psychological and psychiatric treatment.

The court heard Driscoll once had sex with the dog in front of her partner, and on two other occasions sent video of her having intercourse with the dog to arouse him.

Judge Martin said the acts were repulsive, repugnant and "completely against the order of nature".

Mr Neal said it was hard to understand how Driscoll could be allowed to own or be in charge of a pet.

"Any case to do with cruelty to animals, including bestiality ... it should be considered whether the offender should be allowed to own animals at all or for a fair period of time," he said.

"In general, judges are too lenient on animal cruelty offences ... across the board we'd like to see judges take animal cruelty cases a lot more seriously."
