Man, 82, loses wife in 'tragic' crash after ploughing into Sydney house

An 82-year-old man is dealing with loss of his elderly wife after the car he was driving ploughed into a home at Sydney's south-west.

The vehicle was captured on CCTV travelling at speed, suggesting he might have suffered a medical episode while behind the wheel.

While the man was pulled out alive, his 81-year-old wife couldn't be saved.

NSW Police described the crash as "absolutely tragic".

"Our hearts absolutely bleed for this family.. It is a single vehicle crash but the driver has lost his partner in this crash and whatever the circumstances," Supt. Robert Toynton said.

CCTV filmed the BMW travelling at speed along Punchbowl Road at Belfield.

Why the car was travelling so quickly is unclear and it appears there was no attempt to slow down.

Robert Thompson was one of the first on the scene to help the couple.

"All I heard was a loud explosion. His wife's gone," he said.

Meanwhile, a woman studying in the room when the car speared in suffered only a chipped tooth.

She was taken to hospital and treated for shock.

Police say the elderly driver has been informed his wife died in the crash.

Whether he suffered a medical episode will be left to doctors and crash investigators to determine.
