Baseball attracts 100,000 to Sydney

Major League Baseball was a $13 million home-run for Sydney's economy.

The LA Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks played a series of games at the Sydney Cricket Ground over the past four days, including clashes with Team Australia and Saturday's Major League Baseball season-opener.

More than 100,000 people attended the matches, with 25,000 arriving from overseas, NSW Tourism Minister George Souris said.

"It was an economic boon for Sydney and NSW with the direct impact worth at least $13 million and many millions more in flow-on benefits," he added.

Melbourne may disagree but Mr Souris also claimed that NSW has now re-established itself as Australia's "major events capital".
