Ex-NSW Premier O'Farrell can't recall Mont Blanc pen gift

A company bidding for a major construction contract in Sydney gave former NSW premier Barry O'Farrell bought a $1195 Mont Blanc pen.

But the outgoing politician has no memory of receiving the gift and never declared it on the parliamentary register of interest, as required by law.

It has been one year since Mr O'Farrell was forced to resign the premiership after failing to declare his receipt of a $3000 bottle of 1959 Grange Hermitage wine.

The latest gift was revealed in an internal review of the expense accounts of construction company Thiess, a subsidiary of Leighton Holdings, Fairfax Media reports.

The date the pen was handed to Mr O'Farrell is unknown.

Mr O'Farrell told Fairfax Media the only time he met any representative of Thiess was in June 2013 at an event for a railway construction project.

"Having checked with the minister for transport and my staff who attended the event, none of us recall a Mont Blanc pen being presented to me," the ex-premier said.

"If such a gift had arrived separately in my office, it would have been dealt with by my staff in accordance with the ministerial and parliamentary guidelines."

Mr O'Farrell said a Mont Blanc pen gift was declared in the 2013/14 register of official gifts after it was presented to him at a meeting with an education group, not with Thiess, and the pen is still the Premier's Department.
