The Nationals have used the swearing-in of Barnaby Joyce as deputy prime minister as a platform to raise funds for their federal election campaign.

Mr Joyce has replaced Warren Truss as Nationals leader and was sworn in as deputy prime minister in Canberra on Thursday.

A few hours later, Nationals federal president Larry Anthony emailed supporters seeking donations of as little as $5.

The email kicks off with: "Today, Barnaby Joyce was sworn in as Australia's 17th deputy prime minister.

"Barnaby leads a dynamic Nationals team ... contribute $5 today to stand up for regional Australia."
