Barnaby Joyce to move water reforms

The largest owner of water in the Murray Darling Basin is set to get more buyback flexibility under changes to water laws.

The federal government will finally announce measures it will accept from recommendations of a review into the Water Act almost one year after it was released.

Water Minister Barnaby Joyce will introduce legislation to parliament implementing amendments to water laws on Thursday.

One of them is to allow the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder, who is in charge of environmental water flows in the Basin, more flexibility on buybacks to achieve water savings.

That was among 23 recommendations from last year's report which also called for simpler processes for state water resource plans and another review of the Basin plan in 2026.
