Bank super profit tax idea wins approval

More than three in five Australians want to see a super profits tax on the nation's big banks, new polling finds.

The Australia Institute poll, released on Thursday, found just one in five people disapproved of the idea of the government collecting an extra tax on especially high bank profits and a similar number said they didn't know.

The results were broadly similar when broken down by voting intention, while more men than women approved of such a plan.
