Banana Boat sunscreen faces potential class action

Popular sunscreen maker Banana Boat could face a class action over claims they incorrectly labelled the sun protection of their products.

Seven of the brand’s aerosol products were allegedly marketed and advertised as falsely having SPF of 50+, according to Bannister Law.

The sunscreens that are claimed to have been affected by the labelling were:

• Banana Boat Kids Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+;

• Banana Boat Ultra Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+;

• Banana Boat Sport Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+;

• Banana Boat Everyday Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+;

• Banana Boat SunComfort Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+;

• Banana Boat Dry Balance Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+; and

• Banana Boat Sport Coolzone Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+

ABC News reports a mother-of-five is leading the potential class action, after her children suffered sunburn after applying Banana Boat Ultra Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+ and Kids Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+.

Today’s development comes after hundreds of the brand’s customers complained of “horrific burns” last summer.

“Within an hour I can only describe what felt like searing hot knife blades across my skin,” Perth woman Jo Munday wrote on Banana Boat’s Facebook page in January.

At the time, Banana Boat Vice President Ivan Nuich told 9news.com.au in a statement the company was confident in the effectiveness of its products.

"We are very sorry to hear that some customers have been unhappy with certain Banana Boat products. We would like to reassure everyone that we take each customer’s concerns very seriously and investigate them when contacted," he said.

The Bannister Law firm, which has branches across Australia, is now asking people who have purchased one or more of the listed products to register.
