Baby girl wakes from coma after family takes court action to prevent doctors switching off her life support

A baby’s incredible fight for life has stunned French doctors who almost pulled the plug on her life support.

One-year-old Marwa had been in a medically-induced coma since September at Marseille’s La Timone hospital, after she was struck down with a virus.

Doctors believed she would never wake up and that if she did she would have severe abnormalities, including the inability to breath independently.

But her parents fought back, seeking court action to keep their daughter alive for as long as possible.

An online petition, ‘Not without my Marwa’, received more than 114,000 signatures.

Marwa defied all odds – waking up after the family was granted a two-month extension.

In footage posted to Facebook by her father Mohamed Bouchenafa, soon after she came out of the coma, the bright-eyed young girl is seen staring contentedly at the camera.

Mr Bouchenafa has since clarified on social media that all of Marwa’s organs are working as they should.

“Her treatment continues, but we see progress every day and that gives us a lot of hope,” he told a local news website.

“When I speak to her, she hears my voice, she reacts, sometimes even smiles.”
