Baby formula recalled over illness-causing toxin

Batches of baby formula have been pulled from supermarket shelves around the country after they were found to contain an illness-causing toxin.

Sanulac Nutritionals is conducting a recall of its Alula Gold Reflux infant formula 900g (0-12 months), and its Alula Colic and Constipation infant formula 850g (0-12 months).

Specifically, the recall applies to the Alula Gold Reflux batch number 8000003387 with a use by date of 17/03/2027, and to the Alulica Colic and Consumption batch number 8000003407 with a use-by date of 17/03/2027.

Acting Food Standards Australia New Zealand chief executive Christel Leemhuis said the action followed an international recall by Lactalis, which prompted Sanulac to recall their affected batches.

"The potential presence of the cereulide toxin has been linked to an ingredient used in the Alula products, the same situation which led to a recent recall of specialist infant formula products," Leemhuis said.

"Cereulide can cause gastrointestinal illness but there have been no reports of associated illness in Australia.

"Other formula products not affected by the recall are available from retailers and parents and carers can contact their health care provider or pharmacist to discuss what's best for their baby."

The Alula products subject to the recall have been sold at Coles, Woolworths, Big W, IGA, Costco, pharmacies and Amazon nationally and online.

People are advised to not feed their children with this formula and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
