Baby Asha: Let Them Stay banner draped from Story Bridge and children join rally for infant facing return to Nauru

Protesters have draped a Let Them Stay banner from Brisbane's Story Bridge and schoolchildren have joined the rally for Baby Asha, who faces being returned to detention in Nauru after receiving treatment at Brisbane's Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

Last week, hospital staff decided not to release the 12-month-old girl until "a suitable home environment is identified", and hundreds of people have since maintained an around-the-clock protest in support of their decision.

Two women suspended a #LetThemStay protest banner from the bridge for about two hours today, before climbing back up and being taken away by police.

Busloads of schoolchildren from around greater Brisbane also joined in the protest at the hospital, as it entered its seventh day.

"If you've got a child the age of 12 in your school who can see the moral issues in this, I better put my morality where my morality is," school principal Paul Thomson said.

The federal government has not softened its position on the case.

"Once the medical support has been provided, then the person will be able to return to Nauru," Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said today.

"That remains the position of the government."

Earlier today, a case worker who spent time with Baby Asha and her mother said she was turned away from the hospital ward by immigration staff who were guarding the room.

"It's just been kind of hard to explain 'yes I'm here, I’m outside the hospital, I'm so sorry I can't come in I'm trying to fix it, but I just don't think I can'," asylum seeker support worker Natasha Blucher said.

Baby Asha was taken to the hospital to be treated for accidental burns she suffered from boiling water while in detention on Nauru.
