Stop squeezing the avos: Shoppers told to be less touchy-feely
Aussies have been ordered to stop prodding avocadoes in the produce aisle.
New research has found 97 percent of shoppers squeeze at least three avocadoes before putting them in the shopping basket, The Australian reports.
Repeatedly touching avos causes internal brown spots, ending in a less than tasty result when the time comes for smashed avo on toast.
Professor Daryl Joyce from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries told the newspaper the “average squeeze” results in up to 30 Newtons of pressure- about three times the amount needed to trigger internal bruising.
He is now developing a machine that will alert shoppers to how ripe their chosen avocado is.
An alternate way to detect how long before an avocado is ready to eat is through their colour, LoveOneToday suggests.
The Hass variety displays darker skin as the ripening process moves along; the same method can’t be used for Shepard avocadoes, however, which have bright green skin when ripe and not ripe.
