Woman missing after house fire on Sydney's Northern Beaches

There are grave fears for the occupant of a Sydney home who is still missing after a fire broke out on the Northern Beaches this morning.

Emergency services were called to a house on Hilltop Road at Avalon Beach at about 1am overnight.

A heavy crew presence was needed to quell the blaze.

Police said an occupant of the house remains unaccounted for.

9News understands the occupant was an elderly woman.

Rescuers have not yet been able to enter the home, with emergency services personnel working to ensure the structure is safe.

Inquiries into the fire are ongoing.
