Aged care home Pinaroo Roma manager Melanie Calvert told 9News residents and staff were "devastated" at the loss of Mr Kruger.

"His presence will be missed along with his singing and storytelling," Ms Calvert said.

"We understand that everyone saw him as Australia's oldest man, but for us, he was a friend and just a normal man with a bit more history than everyone else.

"We are all devastated, and it will take us a while to get used to not seeing him around the facility."

Mr Kruger spent most of his life in regional Queensland.

He was born in Kilcoy on January 13, 1910, and only gave into retirement from his Maranoa region cattle property during his mid-90s.

He took the title as the country's oldest man in May, passing World War I veteran Jack Lockett's record of 111 years and 123 days.

Federal MP David Littleproud, whose electorate takes in Roma, also paid tribute to Mr Kruger.

"Sad to say Australia's oldest man, our very own Dexter Kruger, has passed away at the age of 111 and 188 days in Roma," he said.

"It was an honour and privilege to have known Dexter.

"He touched so many people in such a positive way over his long journey.

"We'll miss him deeply but we were lucky to have had him so long.

"I caught up with Dexter only recently to celebrate his remarkable achievement. Rest In Peace."
