Australians offer homes to Syrian refugees

A Victorian businessman has offered to house more than one hundred Syrian refugees in a resort and a West Australian lawyer has put his hand up to foster a child.

Companies are also offering refugees homes in mining camps and on houseboats, the federal government says.

These are just some of the stories of Australians responding to the government's incoming intake of 12,000 refugees fleeing the Middle East conflict.

Social Services Minister Christian Porter says offers of help of "every conceivable type" have come from all over the nation.

"Australians have big hearts and deep pockets," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

The minister says the government has enough housing to meet the incoming demand but the offers of assistance could contribute in other ways.

Mr Porter is equipping MPs with information kits to help them work with their electorates on the issue.

The first refugees are due to arrive before the end of the year.
