Soldier dies at Victorian Army base

An Australian Army soldier has died during a routine training exercise at an Army base in Victoria’s north.

The soldier, who is yet to be named, is understood to have collapsed while training at the Puckapunyal Military base in the state’s north at 7.30 am yesterday.

Defence personnel attempted to resuscitate him before paramedics arrived.

"Defence can confirm an Australian Army soldier died yesterday morning at the Puckapunyal Military Training Area, Victoria," a Department of Defence spokesman told 9News.

"The soldier collapsed during a routine training activity and CPR was performed prior to the Victorian Ambulance service arriving on scene.

"Defence has notified the soldier’s family and is providing support to them during this difficult time."

Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics were called to the scene shortly after 7.30am.

The Defence Department is assisting state authorities to determine the cause of death.
