Eight out of 1000 children aren't safe at home in Australia and must live in foster homes, group homes or the care of other family members. Here's how the numbers stack up:

* There are no complete national statistics but figures form the AIHW suggest there were 43,009 children in out-of-home care, not including the care of relatives, on June 30 2014.

INDIGENOUS KIDS

* Indigenous children are nine times more likely to end up in care than non-indigenous kids.

* Nationally there are 51 indigenous children per 1000 in the general population in out-of-home care.
